In the 1980s, I was creating comics and belonged to the Northwest Comic Association. We met bi-monthly on Friday evenings at The Art Institute in Seattle and shared our latest projects. After these creative gatherings, we headed to Jake’s, a 24-hour café modeled after the Blues Brothers movie. The Jake burger was my favorite, and as the night wore on, we switched from beer to coffee. It was a time of free thinkers who had long vanished in a world that no longer tolerated bohemian ideas.
